Depending on which newspaper or alternate source of news one pursues they can and will find reports that negotiations regarding the fiscal cliff are going well and almost finalized or that they are a disaster and nothing positive is happening.

One of the consequences of these positive and negative reports is that the financial markets reflect the confusion and react in different ways that no person can accurately predict. This leaves millions of investors totally confused and deeply concerned of their investments and their futures. Trading the volatility index (VXX) is probably your best bet since all the uncertainty will cause it to rise. Just be careful for a deal to get done which will make the Index reverse course quickly.

In 2011, Google Inc. avoided some $2 billion of income tax payments by moving its revenues to a shell company in Bermuda. Google actually shifted almost $10 billion in profits from its overseas subsidiaries to Bermuda. Since Bermuda does not have corporate income taxes, Google benefited by cutting its tax rate by half.

However, this tax avoidance has not gone over well with Governments in both the United States and Europe, which are both struggling with huge deficits. Just recently, the governing body of the European Union requested its members to adopt rules for anti-abuse and to list tax havens for blacklisting.

There is heavy debate about the fiscal cliff and how it will affect the nation's long term debt; and how fiscal policy will effect growth over the next months and years. The outcome of the fiscal cliff negotiations are directly related to the functionality of the current political leadership and the status of the economy in 2012. These two areas are very much connected since the fiscal policy in both the US and Europe has already caused a drag on economic growth. The slowdown is expected to be ongoing as policymakers work on addressing the long term debt burdens.

Record Quarterly Earnings for Kors

For a week now, analysts have been banking on the strong earnings of fashion conglomerate Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. after the company announced that it once again achieved a strong Q2 fiscal finish. Kors surpassed expectations by more than twenty percent in earnings, and has been surprising Wall Street for the past four quarters. The Zacks top performer has a 78.6% year-to-date average.

Burger King Restaurant Sales Are Up

Burger King does well as McDonalds falters.

Last quarter, Burger King did better than expected, in contrast to McDonalds worst performance in restaurant sales in nearly a decade.

Executives from the company did not say whether increased restaurant sales and new customers were from McDonalds or other competitors, such as Wendy's, KFC, A&W, Hardees, Carl Jr.s, and other fast food establishments.

Daniel Schwartz, CFO says they expect to keep the share of business they have gained, and sales have continued to grow this October.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer made her first earnings report in October 2012. In the conference she said that she is very impress with the progress of the company in the third quarter. She also said that Yahoo is working with Microsoft to improve search. Wall Street though wants to know what the outline is for reviving the Web Company's revenue growth.

Trulia Inc. is riding the housing recovery well and has just gone public. With only one week of trading, it is now valued at over half a billion dollars.

The online real estate company opened on the New York Stock Exchange at $22 per share which was well above the asking price. Its offering is a test for how much people have overall interest in IPOs since Facebook's bad debut. Many companies are happy that it went so well the first day of Trulia's debut. Trulia makes money by selling subscriptions and advertisements to realtors. It has not returned a profit yet but its revenue has nearly doubled in the last year. If they lose those realtors, then their company will hurt so they must make sure that there is a demand for houses.
